Located in the northeastern area of Kasari, Amami City, this cape protrudes out into the Pacific Ocean. It is said that the name 'Cape Ayamaru' is derived from the location's resemblance to a "mari," or a woven "aya"(diagonal striped) patterned ball, hence the name "aya-maru" in Japanese. Visitors can enjoy a great panoramic view of the coral reefs around the cape with a jungle of Sotetsu trees (cycadophyte) spreading along under the observatory. Kikaijima Island appears on the eastern horizon on clear days.
